Colombia's President Says 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' if US Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump along with Colombia's president have turned up the tone of their war of words, further raising strains bilaterally following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Escalating Tensions and Claims

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump threatened similar use of force towards the South American nation, stating the country is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the US."

While Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

This nation for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and received wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is predominantly run by illegal armed groups such as the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Firm Answer

In response to a query if a military operation similar to Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump said: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And should they arrest the president, whom a large part of the population holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Leader

Petro spent some years as a young man participating with the radical M-19 armed organization but is not believed that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before winning the presidency.

"I made a vow not to touch arms again ... but for Colombia I will take up the fight," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister announced that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have denounced the threats of American military action on Colombia.

Political and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization after he encouraged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. In October, authorities imposed economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and various key allies.

Concurrently the US was building up its military presence near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed operations on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
