Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
