A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
